Contemporary Mosaic Sculpture
Mosaic sculpture for the garden is a specialty of ours. We love to find unique bases for our mosaic - things that have worked hard in other lifetimes and now give them the glory of becoming a fabulous piece of art. What better way to be immortalized. We have our "Wizard of Functionality" better known as Rick to thank for many of our unique pieces. That man can see the artistic potential in just about anything! Read on to see what we mean. Please browse through our varied mosaic sculptures. We have so much fun making them, we want to share the good time with you. Grab a glass of wine or cup of tea or whatever else might be your pleasure and stroll through our virtual gallery. Gallery of Mosaic Sculpture Sticks and Stones In our passion to re-purpose materials, in the first two sculptures, we've used very funky antique foundry parts for the base.
Kind of Blue 1922 $350Picture the soulful sounds of Miles Davis and you'll get an idea of where we were going with this sculpture. Turquoise, blue, black and lime green shards of glass tile are united by a river of glittering silver. Each side of this antique foundry part holds a different pattern and features a piece of Jane's fused glass. Rick set the brushed stainless steel in a base of black granite with the number 1922 etched on the top. Steel wire erupts from the top like fireworks on the Fourth of July.
Long Tall Texan Private Collection, TexasEach of the three sides of this antique foundry part is covered in a different pattern with glass tiles in a blend of copper, walnut, hot pink, red, purple and yellow. Yee-Haw! Two large purple glass gems serve as a focal point on one side. The piece is mounted on a copper pole and capped in copper.
P.S. That's Jane holding the Long Tall Texan. We were in a friend's studio proudly showing off our new piece!
Petal PowerHere's a quiz. What is the base for these mosaic sculptures? Guys, or mechanically minded gals - you ought to know this! Okay, you're right - who really says "gals" anymore? Men or women - what's the base? If you guessed used brake rotors, you'd be 100% correct.
Petal Power 1 $275This is a wild assortment of color to enchant your outdoor living area. Hot pink, purple, turquoise, orange, glass gems, and the kitchen sink. Well, not the kitchen sink, but we do have washers, (though not the kind you find in a kitchen.) But, we digress. This piece is mounted on a big old chunk of sandstone, so you know it isn't going anywhere except where you put it in your yard or garden for everyone to enjoy. Charcoal grout unites the tesserae into a cohesive expression of color and playfulness.
Petal Power 2 NFS Private Collection, Colorado This sculpture is a sister to Petal Power 1 and just like sisters, it's similar, yet different. We used many of the same colors of glass, washers and glass gems, and just arranged them differently.
Alien Pod Flower Sculptures
A sculptor friend of ours, Warren Cullar refers to this mosaic sculpture as "one of your alien pod flower sculptures." Well we rather liked his description and are encouraged to make a series of alien pod flower sculptures. Stay tuned!
Little Grass Shack NFS Private Collection, ColoradoLittle Grass Shack consists of three mosaiced ceramic balls in tropical colors of yellow, orange, green and purple. Each ball is seated on copper pipe and the whole thing is mounted on a lovely chunk of sandstone.
Little Grass Shack was featured in Issue 5 of this lovely arty magazine produced by our friends Sarah Fishburn and Angela Cartwright. If you haven't checked it out, please do.
Black Magic $300This series of three small mosaic- covered ceramic balls set in red sandstone is reminiscent of the American Southwest - think Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and some parts of Colorado. Glass tile in shades of ivory, black, brown and a golden orangish-yellow that feels like the sun, give this piece the feel of rock canyon walls and the open expanse of the desert.
Pink Pods NFS Private Collection, Colorado Three spheres mounted on copper tubing and secured in a sandstone base. This mosaic sculpture, one of the Alien Pod Flower Series, is an other-worldly blend of pink and purple glass tile, with a touch of silver glitter thrown in for good measure. Picture the color of dawn, just before the sun shows her face, when the sky revels in a rosy glow. And that, my friends, is how the Pink Pods look sitting in their Colorado garden home.
Flying Purple Eater $250Glass gems, and red, purple, silver, and brushed metal tesserae comprise this sculpture. The base is one of our recycled brake rotors. Hang it or place it in a stand to show it off. When we went to name the piece, Jane commented, "It needs to say something about Mars." From there we got to Flying Purple People Eater, though we're not exactly sure how that leap was made!
Light My Fire NFS Private Collection, ColoradoThis combination stand and small gazing ball has a background of walnut brown glass with accent circles of yellow, orange, purple and green. Each side is different, giving the piece eye-appeal from every angle. Four large glass gems draw the eye upward to the orange sparkling gazing ball perched delicately atop this amazing stand.
This mosaic sculpture makes me want to see what else these girls do
